Even the most minimalist and shy women in makeup tend to wear mascara, and for good reason. The lush, dark lashes not only exude femininity, they also brighten and enlarge your eyes. Once you've found the right formula for your lashes, applying mascara is virtually foolproof. What is there not to like? Whether worn as an accent on the bare face or as the crowning of sensual night eyes, this low-effort makeup has high and high impact.

Three stages of applying mascara:

Step one: curl your lashes. Open the curler and place it around the lashes and as close to the upper eyelid as possible without pinching the skin. Keep your eyes open and gently squeeze the curling iron closed. Pump the curler once, bending your wrist up to curl your lashes and relax.

Step Two: Take the wand out of the tube (don't pump it, forcing air into the tube and drying the mask). Wipe off excess mascara from the wand. Hold the wand horizontally at the level of your lashes and move it from front to bottom to create thickness before pulling up and toward the tips.

Step three: wait a minute and repeat for a smooth finish. If you naturally have long lashes, one coat is probably enough for the day. If your lashes are light enough, apply a touch of mascara to the lower lashes as well, so the upper lashes don't look artificially colored.

How to remove your mascara

Unless you use a mild soap-free cleanser, your regular facial cleanser is probably too irritating to use on the delicate eye area. To clean regular mascara, try a creamy or water-based makeup remover, which should dissolve without rubbing. To remove waterproof formulas, you will need an oil-based remover. Massage onto your lashes and then press it with a damp cotton ball or washcloth (dark in color). Avoid rubbing or using fabrics that may be abrasive and leave residue.
